Fiji Blues win Rooster Grassroots Sevens Tournament

3 min

The Fiji Blues ran rampant today at the HFC Bank Stadium crushing Vacalea 26-5 clinching the Rooster Chicken’s Grassroots Sevens Tournament.

After yesterday’s shaky start against the Dominion Brother the national shadow team put on a rugby clinic displaying some serious sevens rugby prowess under drizzling conditions.

The Blues began their onslaught as soon as the first whistle was blown, constantly applying pressure to Vacalea inside their red zone.

Vacalea defended fiercely till a well worked team try saw the Blues crossing over in the left corner in the second minute.

A wonderful break by Vacalea’s playmaker but he is caught at the Blues ten metre line.

Blues scrumhalf is penalised and sent to the bin for a deliberately slowing the ball.

Despite being a player down the Blues have taken the match up a notch in attack and came close to scoring another try in the corner.

Vacalea makes another break but loses the ball inside the Blues half.

A great counterattack by the national team scoring another sensational try near the uprights, conversion is unsuccessful, leading 12-0 at half time.

The Blues waste no time in the second wining a penalty at the restart, some superb passes in contact and excellent support plays has them dotting down under the uprights.

The conversion is over the Blues are running rampant with a 19-0 lead.

Indiscipline cost the Blues another player to the sin bin, Vacalea capitalise on their numerical advantage with a wonderful, worked try.

The conversion misses with Vacalea trailing 5-19.

Vacalea is putting up a fight, their hard defence has the Blues scramble for possession on their own tryline wining them a crucial five metre scrum penalty.

But the Blues hold on bravely defending their redzone, doing enough to prevent a try as their penalised player returns to the pitch.

With their team back to full force they turn defence into attack scoring another spectacular try.

With a successful conversion the Blues win the Grassroots Tournament 26-5 against Vacalea Brothers.

Head coach Viliame Satala said the boys really stepped up after a near loss to Dominion Brothers in their opening match.

“The boys really stepped up after that scare from Dominion, against Army the boys began to find their cohesion and confidence, and they keep the momentum till today.”  He explained.

Despite the win Satala admits there is still a lot to work on, and they hope to participate in more local tournaments to help the boys continue to sharpen their skills.

In the other results Senikala edged Kadavu 21-20 to win the women’s division, while the FSC Grassroots team beat JVJQ 26-10 to win the U20 Cup final.
