TIMES SHOPPER | Lazy shopping affects you and your family

Being a lazy shopper can affect you and your family, says Sereseini Ragiagia, 66.

The Davuilevu Housing resident said she prefers to shop at RB Patel Supermarket where Fijian Holdings Ltd is a significant shareholder.

“Shoppers should support locally owned businesses and products to help with the growth of our economy,” said Ms Ragigia.

She moves through the isles with purpose, shopping not just for herself but for more than 10 people every week.

With a list in-hand and experience on her side, she spends close to $300 weekly making sure she buys enough for everyone she cares for.

The native from Namara, Kadavu doesn’t mind travelling as far as the Nausori Municipal Market weekly, just to buy a fresh batch of crops and vegetables for her family.

She said farmers from the three major provinces of Rewa, Naitasiri and Tailevu provide daily produce such as dalo, tavioka, yams and kumala, every day.

“You can never go wrong with Nausori.”

On every shopping trip she buys a bundle of fish for her family.

It has been a long-standing favourite in her household, and she believes no shopping is complete without fresh fish for the weekend lunch or other sea food for dinner.

Ms Ragiagia said fish and a variety of sea foods are a must because health and nutrition are priorities,

“For me and my family I make sure I feed them sea food or fish twice a week.”

Ms Ragiagia’s advice to consumers is to never be lazy when shopping.

She emphasised the importance of asking questions when out shopping and approaching the sales assistant if you need to.

Ms Ragiagia urges the unemployed youths in Fiji to return to their respective villages and work on the land.

Only then will it help provide for their families and the community.

Ms Ragiagia’s dedicationreflects the habits of many senior shoppers who play an active role in their households.

Her weekly trips do more than fill her pantry.

They keep her moving, thinking and engaged with the world around her.
