EDITORIAL COMMENT | A season of hope

4 min

Today marks a very special moment in the Christian calendar. It’s a day of reflection, hope and renewal centred on family, faith and compassion.

As Christians around the world celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the Bible recounts a story that has endured for centuries. It is about the humble arrival of a child in a manger in Bethlehem and the beginning of a journey that would shape Christianity and influence humanity in profound ways. It is a story rich in meaning, offering timeless lessons of humility, generosity and love.

At the heart of Christmas lies a powerful message of hope and renewal. Despite life’s many challenges, this season encourages reflection on the positive values of giving, kindness and selflessness. Christians rejoice in the story of a baby born in modest circumstances, reminding us that greatness can emerge from humility and that light can shine even in the darkest places.

This story has been retold countless times, across cultures, languages and generations. Yet its relevance has never faded. It remains closely tied to this time of the year, resonating deeply with believers and non-believers alike.

We live in a country where religion holds an important place in many people’s lives. Over the years, we have learnt to appreciate and respect the diversity of beliefs, customs and traditions that define our nation. Like other significant religious observances, Christmas Day holds special meaning for many Fijians.

While Christians gather to acknowledge the birth of Christ, others will take this opportunity to rest and unwind after what has been, for many, a demanding year. Families will come together, meals will be shared, and churches and masses will be attended as the spirit of goodwill fills the day.

This season also invites reflection. As the year draws to a close, our problems may momentarily feel less overwhelming, even if only briefly, reminding us of the importance of perspective and gratitude. It is a time to acknowledge the roles of Mary and Joseph, and to embrace the enduring message of hope that Christmas represents.

As we go about our plans, let us spare a thought for those who are less fortunate, who for various reasons are unable to celebrate today. We also remember those who must work to ensure our country continues to function, from essential services to frontline workers, whose dedication often goes unnoticed.

Beyond our shores, we reflect on global conflicts, including the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, and unrest in other parts of the world. We mourn the loss of innocent lives and pray for peace, understanding and compassion to prevail.

In Fiji, Christmas is woven into our social fabric. Even in our darkest moments, hope has the power to uplift and unite us. This season reminds us that peace, unity and compassion are responsibilities we all share.

As we celebrate today, may we carry the spirit of Christmas beyond a single day, choosing kindness over indifference, generosity over division, and hope over despair.

On behalf of The Fiji Times, I wish you and your loved ones a safe, peaceful and joyous Christmas, filled with love, hope and renewed purpose.
