Minister calls for action | ‘Waste management, a pressing development issue’

WASTE management remains a pressing development issue for Fiji, says Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Viliame Gavoka.

Mr Gavoka told the Pacific Recycling Foundation’s VAKA Forum in Nadi this week that tourism activities contributed significantly to waste generation across destinations.

“Landfill capacity is limited, and communities face direct impacts,” Mr Gavoka said.

“These realities demand action — action grounded in evidence and cooperation, and responsibility across all sectors.”

He said the tourism sector connected Fiji to the global community in shaping visitor experiences and influencing consumption behaviour.

“Today, global visitors assess destinations through environmental performance and it is becoming a global trend. Waste practices influence credibility and trust.

“Leadership from tourism carries national weight. This dialogue is timely and aligned with national priorities, including our Blue Ocean commitments.

“Alignment between tourism operators and grassroots recycling organisations strengthen results. It improves practicality, accountability, and scale.”

Mr Gavoka urged tourism operators and stakeholders that progress required a shift towards recycling and recovery systems.

“This shift eases landfill pressure, supports environmental protection, and creates social opportunity.

“Grassroots recyclers already contribute daily to these outcomes. Their experience informs workable solutions.”

He said circular waste models demonstrated responsibility for waste generated during visitor stays.

“Traditional disposal systems no longer meet national needs.

“Measurable actions matter, clear targets matter, and data matters.”
