Temo: Rugby keeps evolving

SWIRE Shipping Fijian Drua new signing and lock forward Temo Mayanavanua says rugby is a constantly evolving game and players can no longer rely on performances from the past to succeed at the highest level.

“Rugby is not the same as it was five years ago. We can’t afford our performance from five years ago to carry us through,” Mayanavanua said during a combined training session with the academy players.

“We need to keep evolving, keep improving, and that’s how we’ll get the results we want.”

The former Northampton Saints lock, who will join the Drua for the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season, believes having regular professional training sessions based in Fiji is a major step forward for local rugby.

He said the environment provides a valuable opportunity not only for senior players, but also for young talents aspiring to make rugby a career.

Mayanavanua praised the inclusion of academy players in the combined training session, saying it exposed them to the standards and discipline required at the professional level.

He said the initiative was about showing young players what is expected if they want to progress in the sport and emphasised the importance of making the most of every opportunity.

“It’s brilliant that we’re looking towards the future of rugby in our nation,” he said.

“When you get given the chance, you have to hold it with both hands and make sure you utilise it to the fullest.”

As he prepares for his return to Fiji colours with the Drua next season, Mayanavanua said continuous improvement and attention to detail would be key, adding that rugby will always demand players to adapt, learn and push themselves to higher standards.
