CRICKET Fiji hopes its new national coach from India will arrive in the country by January next year, in time to help the under-19 girls and men’s teams prepare for their respective upcoming international competitions.
The organisation is negotiating with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in recruiting a suitable person for the important job.
Cricket Fiji CEO Siti Rokoro said this move of recruiting a coach from India was part of a discussion between Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni and India’s PM Narendra Modi.
The discussion happened during Rabuka’s visit to Modi in August this year.
“We are negotiating through the embassy here and BCCI to get a coach hopefully by January next year. We are currently in the process of identifying a coach to come over.
“We have provided them with what we wanted, and they have updated us this week that they’ve put up advertisement for a potential coach to join us next year. We know that India is the leading cricket country in the world and we want to benchmark as well,” Rokoro stated.
As Cricket Fiji did not include an expat coach in their budget submission, the organisation may have to shoulder the responsibility without the assistance of the Fiji National Sports Commission.
“We will work with what we have and see what BCCI can provide just to see this through.”
If the coach arrives in January, it will provide the opportunity for the current local coaches to get invaluable advice.
“We have two international tournaments for next year, the first is in April which is the girls U19 tournament in Papua New Guinea. It will be the second time that the girls’ team wil be competing in the world cup qualifier.
“The second one will be in Japan, this will be the men’s world cup qualifier as well, so we hope to get our coach in by January to support the preparations of these two teams. We have our own coaches now, but we will see once he comes in, we will have a look at his credentials and providing our coaches with some technical advice.”
This is one of the many goals Cricket Fiji has set for the 2026 season.
