FORMER Pacific sprint king Banuve Tabakaucoro is set to transform the Queen Victoria athletics preparation, with the introduction of a structured off-season training for the first time in the school’s history.
This strategic move marks a significant shift in the school’s approach to athletics, aiming to elevate the team’s performance on the national stage.
“This is new to QVS, so I’m just trying to rope them into the system as well,” Tabakaucoro said.
“They’re very easy to work with, the boys from QVS. The discipline level is very high. It’s just such a pleasure to work with.”
Despite the promising start, Tabakaucoro admits he has yet to receive full support from all QVS stakeholders, partly due to his background as a former Marist Brothers High School student.
“Still trying to rope in some of the old boys, who understandably are still a bit standoffish. But I think I need to prove myself before we can really rally in all the support,” he shared.
Undeterred, Tabakaucoro is focused on demonstrating results through his athletes’ performances.
“Right now, I’m just going to keep my head down and just keep working,” he stated, underscoring his commitment to winning the trust and backing of the wider QVS community.
Last year QVS secured 3rd place overall with a strong haul of 26 medals.
The Intermediate Boys 4x100m relay Gold and a podium finish in the senior boys 200m was a highlight of the team’s achievements in 2024.
Underscoring the significant contribution Tabakaucoro has made, since joining as the sprints coach for the school’s athletics team.
